Sir Jonathan Jones KCB KC (Hon)

Biography

Jonathan Jones joined BIICL as Honorary Senior Fellow in 2024. Jonathan is a Senior Consultant in constitutional and public law at Linklaters LLP. He was previously (2014-2020) Treasury Solicitor and Permanent Secretary of the Government Legal Department - the most senior legal official in the UK government, and held other senior legal posts in the Home Office, the Attorney General's Office and HM Treasury. Jonathan is also a Senior Fellow of the Institute for Government, a Visiting Professor at Durham Law School, and a Master of the Bench of Middle Temple. He is a member of the UK Governance Project, whose report in 2024 recommended improvements to standards of conduct in public life and governance in the UK. He regularly writes and speaks on current legal and constitutional topics.

Jonathan was appointed honorary Queen's Counsel (now King's Counsel) in 2019, and knighted (KCB) for public service in the 2020 New Year's Honours.
