Event Details

The British Institute of International and Comparative Law London (BIICL) invites you to an international litigation evening seminar organised by its Product Liability Forum, at 5.15pm on Thursday 26 September 2024, in the Distillery Building, Dublin, in association with the European Law Institute.

The first session, chaired by Mr. Justice Maurice Collins, of the Irish Supreme Court, will discuss the new European Product Liability Directive, which introduces new presumptions in favour of plaintiffs with plausible cases and other significant reforms, and the funding of complex tort cases, including third party funding. The panel includes Sarah Moore of Leigh Day London and Roddy Bourke of McCann FitzGerald LLP as panelists.

The second session will address multiparty and collective actions, in view of the conclusion of a report by Mr. Justice Peter Kelly that that there is a need to legislate for a comprehensive multi-party action procedure in Ireland. The panel will be chaired by Professor Geraint Howells of University of Galway and panelists include Michael Cush SC, David Kidman, Simmon & Simmons London and Ianika Tzankova, Birkway, the Netherlands. The panel will examine experience of multiparty and class actions in the UK and the Netherlands and discuss the recommendations of the Kelly report.

The event is convened by Professor Duncan Fairgrieve, Director, Product Liability Forum, BIICL and Roddy Bourke, Partner, McCann FitzGerald LLP.
